STOP wasting time, neglecting other priorities, or engaging in controversial topics on social media. As Founders we need to be purposeful in all we do, and this includes how we interact and make use of social media. With a strategic, intentional approach, Founders can leverage social media to build their brand and grow their business - the key lies in how we use it to add value and engage with our community consistently, purposefully and authentically. Its more tricky than it sounds. Here is a checklist of the social media activity you should REFRAIN from doing as a Founder:
Excessive self-promotion: Avoid constantly promoting your product or service without providing valuable content. This is not a bragging space, but rather an opportunity to help others through sharing experiences that could be beneficial to them. Its not about you, it's about them (the potential supporters, collaborators, investors, clients, customers, talent, vendors that you want to join your mission because they see value in it for themselves).
Negativity: Refrain from posting negative or controversial content that could damage your brand's reputation. Negative or controversial content can distract from the brand's core values and mission, potentially causing confusion among customers. Protect your brand's reputation directly links to maintaining customer trust, and building stronger relationships with stakeholders.
Ignoring feedback: Don't ignore negative comments or complaints, as addressing them can improve your brand's image. When we respond in a timely and professional manner it shows onlookers what type of business we are. They are looking at the human side of our business to come out in these moments - potentially an opportunity to shine. Remember, negative feedback can provide valuable insights into areas where the business can improve. You might even find champions coming out of the woodwork to support you IF you handle the sensitivities at play.
Overusing hashtags: While hashtags can be beneficial, avoid using too many irrelevant or spammy ones, it just comes across as unprofessional. It can also dilute your brand message not to mention algorithm penalties, reducing your reach.
Lack of planning: Posting content without a strategy can lead to inconsistent messaging and missed opportunities. Inconsistent or low-quality content can actually damage your brand. One cannot underestimate how relevant, planned and engaging content that aligns with your brand's goals can lead to increased visibility and impact. Without a planned approach, content may not be engaging enough to attract and retain followers.
Using social media as a sales channel: While social media can be a powerful tool for generating sales, it's essential to use it strategically. Customers are more likely to engage with brands that provide valuable, informative, or entertaining content. Constant sales pitches can be off-putting. By focusing on building relationships, providing value, and engaging with the audience, Founders can create a more effective and sustainable sales strategy. Prioritizing engagement, such as responding to comments and participating in discussions, can lead to more meaningful connections and potential sales down the line.
Many founders approach social media completely wrong by treating it as a one-way promotional tool rather than a dynamic platform for engagement and relationship-building. They often underestimate the importance of crafting meaningful content that adds value to their audience, focusing instead on self-promotion and transactional messaging. This misalignment leads to missed opportunities for authentic connections and can alienate potential customers who seek genuine interaction. Additionally, founders may neglect to set clear goals or understand their target audience, resulting in scattered efforts that fail to generate the desired impact. To truly harness the power of social media, founders must shift their mindset from merely broadcasting their message to fostering a two-way conversation that nurtures community and builds trust.
